Scientists decoded the genes of an immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) to reveal its remarkable rejuvenation capabilities. By comparing its genome with that of closely related mortal species crimson jellies (Turritopsis rubra), scientists discovered that its immortal counterpart had twice as many copies of genes involved in DNA repair and protection, producing greater amounts of restorative proteins; plus unique mutations which stunt cell division as well as prevent telomeres (the protective caps at ends of chromosomes from degrade).
Researchers claim their findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could aid them in creating treatments to prevent and treat age-related diseases. At present they are investigating if immortal jellyfish cells could help reverse this aging process in human cells.
Other sea-dwellers such as octopuses and starfish possessing the ability to return to juvenile form are capable of turning off their biological clock; the immortal jellyfish goes one step further by using cell reprogramming to switch it off completely – this allows T. dohrnii to return into clumps of polyps upon experiencing stress or environmental damage.
Motherboard traveled to Japan to meet Shin Kubota, an aquarist responsible for keeping populations of T. dohrnii captive and following them through their weird life cycle. Over two years he has observed immortal jellyfish returning back to early polyp stages at regular intervals – even once within one month!
Though T. dohrnii may not be truly immortal like its namesake Qin Shi Huang sought, Kubota is convinced it offers clues for human longevity. If we can determine how T. dohrnii can reverse and reverse its development, it might be possible for humans to do the same, according to him. But before harvesting T. dohrnii to use in facelifts or hair transplants for commercial gain he warns. His primary goal is understanding its mechanisms rather than exploiting it for commercial gain.
